Trends and Challenges of Online Selling

Online selling, or eCommerce, has changed the way that we shop in the 2020’s. Dating back to 2000, only 0.9% of all retail sales happened online. This number increased to 4.3% in 2010, 10.7% in 2019, and 15.4% in 2023 and this is just in the United States alone. Not surprisingly, given the world stage, eCommerce sales accounted for 19% of all retail sales worldwide. As we inch closer to better retail technologies and automations, we will start to see more transactions happen online. An important trend to track is the number of malls that are shuttering down. As of May 2024, the United States is home to approximately 1,150 and by 2032, Capital One is projecting that there could only be about 150 malls remaining. This is an important and clear shift that is happening in the retail industry.
